Jane Martin

Jane Martin, BA (Hons), MPH. Senior Fellow, Faculty of Dentistry Medicine and Health Sciences, University of Melbourne. Honorary Fellow, School of Health and Social Development, Deakin University. Jane has spent much of her career developing and advocating for effective policy approaches for prevention of risk factors, initially in tobacco control and more recently in alcohol and obesity prevention. She is experienced in developing partnerships and working with stakeholders to develop shared advocacy agendas in prevention. She is engaged in research to support adoption of evidence-based policy and is involved in a number of projects to translate research evidence to policy. Her experience in dissemination of research findings and policy positions through media and other advocacy allows her to effectively advocate for the uptake of evidence informed policy. Jane leads the Obesity Policy Coalition which acts to provide high level policy and regulatory advice around unhealthy food marketing – particularly to children, labelling of packaged foods, and pricing of foods. She holds a number of influential positions, such as a member of the Expert Committee on Obesity of the Australian National Preventive Health Agency; Project Committee of the federal government’s Front of Pack Labelling Project Committee; Chair of the Australia New Zealand Obesity Society’s Public Health Sub-committee. She is active in the media, undertakes lectures and presents in conferences both national and international. She recently returned from a Churchill Fellowship to study advocacy strategies to encourage government to adopt obesity prevention policies, benchmarking the work of the OPC with similar agencies in the USA and UK.
